How it works

How to Trim an Audio File

Three steps, all in your browser.

01

Choose an audio file

Pick an MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG file from your device, or drag it onto the upload box. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

02

Drag the handles to pick the part

Drag the start and end handles on the waveform, or type the times. Add a fade in or out if you like, then preview the selection to check it.

03

Export and download

Choose MP3 or WAV and click Trim and export. Play the result to check it, then download.

Why Use the SonusVid Audio Trimmer

Your File Never Leaves Your Device

Trimming runs entirely in your browser. Your audio is never uploaded to any server.

Free and Unlimited

No sign-in and no credits. Trim as many files as you like.

Trim Precisely on the Waveform

Drag the handles or type the times, down to 0.1 seconds, and nudge them with the arrow keys. The shortest selection is 0.5 seconds.

Fade In and Out

Add a fade in and a fade out of up to 5 seconds each, so the cut points don't click or jump.

MP3 or WAV, Your Choice

MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps, or uncompressed 16-bit WAV. Up to 50MB and 12 minutes per file.

One Click to a Music Video

Trimming Audio: Cuts, Fades and Quality

How to cut audio without a click

Cut while the wave is high and the signal jumps to zero, which you hear as a click. Let the level fade to zero first and there is nothing to hear.

Sound is a wave that swings above and below a centre line. If you cut it while the wave is high, the signal jumps from that level to silence in an instant, and the speaker answers with a click or a pop.

There are two ways to avoid it: cut where the waveform is quiet, or add a very short fade so the level eases down to zero. On the waveform you can see the quiet moments between words, beats and phrases, and those are the best places for a start or end handle.

The preview plays the selection with its fades, so you can hear a cut before you export it. What you hear is what the exported file contains.

What fade in and fade out do

A fade in lifts the start from silence and a fade out lowers the end to silence. The faint bars are the original; the bright ones are the clip with the fades.

A fade in raises the volume from silence to full over the first moments of the clip. A fade out lowers it to silence over the last. Both are straight ramps here: the volume rises or falls at a steady rate.

A fade of half a second is enough to remove a click and still sounds natural. One to two seconds suits a clip or a highlight, and longer fades suit the start or end of a whole song. The tool offers fades from 0 to 5 seconds in half-second steps.

The waveform draws the fade into the picture, so you can see how much of the clip it covers. If the selection is very short, the fades are shortened so that they never overlap.

Does trimming lower the quality?

Cutting loses nothing by itself. Saving as MP3 compresses once more; saving as WAV does not.

Cutting itself loses nothing. The tool decodes the audio, keeps the part you selected, and writes it out again. A WAV adds no further loss, and is always written at 44.1 kHz.

An MP3 is lossy, so saving the clip as MP3 compresses it again and a little more detail is lost. At 320 kbps this is hard to hear. For a clip you will keep editing, save a WAV; for one you will just share, an MP3 is fine.

The original file is never changed. Everything happens on a copy in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How Long Should a Fade Be?

A suggested fade length for common uses.

UseWhat it does
Suggested fade length
Remove a click at a cutHides the jump at the start or end
0.5 s
A short sound or sampleSmooth edges that loop without a pop
0.5–1 s
A clip or highlightA gentle start and end
1–2 s
A song's intro or outroA natural-sounding open or close
2–3 s
A long outroA slow fade to silence
4–5 s
  • These are suggestions. The tool's fades are straight ramps in half-second steps, up to 5 seconds.
  • On a very short selection the fade in and fade out are shortened so they never overlap.
