How to Plan a Great Music Video
How to write a strong music video concept
A music video concept is a one-line promise of what the viewer will see and feel. Strong concepts start from the song itself: what is it about, and how does it move? A breakup ballad and a festival anthem can both happen in a city at night, but one follows a person walking away and the other a crowd running toward the stage.
Give the video a spine. Most memorable concepts follow one character or one image through a beginning, a turn and a release, and they save the biggest visual moment for the song's emotional peak, usually the last chorus. A list of pretty shots without that spine plays like a slideshow.
Make every shot filmable. Loneliness is a feeling; a woman eating alone in a 24-hour diner while the neon sign flickers is a shot. Concrete places, actions and camera moves are what turn an idea into a video, and they are what an AI video model needs to follow your concept.
Story, performance, concept and imagery videos
Most music videos fall into four broad types. A story video follows characters through a plot, like a short film cut to the song. A performance video puts the artist or performers at the center, staged in a space that matches the track. A concept video is built around one device, such as a single continuous shot, a split screen or time running backwards.
An imagery video has no plot at all. It holds one visual idea, such as falling water, empty rooms or slowly changing light, and lets the mood of the song carry it. It suits instrumental tracks and atmospheric songs where a story would feel forced.
The generator returns three ideas of different types, so you can compare a story with a performance or a mood piece before you commit. The table below sums up when each type works best.
From idea to finished music video
Once you pick an idea, click "Make this MV". The concept becomes the brief in the SonusVid music video generator: the title, story arc, visual description and key shots are filled in, and the recommended visual style is selected. If you chose a song file here, it comes along too.
In the generator you can still edit everything. Tighten the story, swap a location or remove a shot you don't want, then choose the aspect ratio for YouTube or TikTok. The AI director reads the brief together with the music, plans the shots on the song's timeline and renders each one.
Keep the brief specific. Name the main character, the places and the turning point, and describe the ending. The more concrete the concept, the more closely the finished video follows it; a vague brief leaves the director to invent its own story.
Four Types of Music Video
Each type does something different well. Use this when you choose an idea.
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Characters live through a plot, like a short film cut to the song | Songs with a clear narrative, ballads |
| Performance | The artist or performers lead, in a space that matches the track | Rhythm-driven songs, bands and dance tracks |
| Concept | Built on one device: a single take, a split screen, time in reverse | Singles that need a hook, videos made for sharing |
| Imagery | No plot; one sustained visual idea carries the mood | Instrumentals, ambient music, moody slow songs |
- Many videos mix two types, such as a story intercut with performance shots.
