Cover Sizes: Masters, Cropping and File Size

What size should a cover master be?

Square cover sizes drawn to scale: a 3000-pixel master can be scaled down to every smaller size.

Streaming services and distributors want a square cover, and most guides name 3000×3000 pixels as the safe master size. A file that size, saved as a JPG or PNG in sRGB colour, is accepted almost everywhere and can be scaled down for the places that ask for less.

Some 2026 guides say Apple Music asks for 4000×4000, while others accept 3000. Bandcamp states 1400×1400 as its minimum and SoundCloud is usually given as 800×800. These figures come from third-party guides, not from the platforms, so check your distributor's own page before you upload.

Always start from the largest picture you have. A small picture stretched to 3000 pixels looks soft, and stores are known to reject covers that are visibly enlarged. The tool tells you when your picture has to be enlarged.

Crop to fill, or keep the whole picture?

The same square picture in a 16:9 frame: on the left it is cropped to fill, losing the top and bottom; on the right it is kept whole, with a blurred backdrop on each side.

Cover sizes come in different shapes. A square cover has to become a 16:9 video cover for YouTube, and a vertical 9:16 frame for short videos. The picture's own shape rarely matches, so something has to give.

Crop to fill scales the picture until it covers the whole frame and cuts off what hangs over the edge. You choose which part stays by dragging and zooming. It suits a picture whose subject sits in the middle.

Keep whole shows all of the picture, as large as it can be, and fills the empty bands with a blurred, darkened copy of the same picture. It is the usual way to turn a square cover into a wide video cover without losing the edges.

PNG, JPG and file size limits

Illustration, not measured sizes: a JPG is smaller than a PNG, and lowering its quality brings it under the size limit line.

PNG is lossless, so the picture is saved exactly as framed, and the file is large. JPG is smaller because it discards detail you are unlikely to notice. Use PNG for a master you may edit again, and JPG for a file you upload.

Some places set a size limit. YouTube thumbnails are commonly given as 2MB, and SoundCloud artwork as 2MB too. For those sizes the tool lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file fits, down to a floor, and shows the final size.

A PNG cannot be compressed this way. If it comes out over the limit you will see a notice, and switching to JPG usually solves it. The limit is advice from the guides: the file still downloads either way.
